METHODOLOGY FOR CONSTRUCTION OF SHOULDERS/MEDIANS/ISLANDS

Scope:
The work shall consists of construction of shoulders on either side of pavement, median in the road dividing carriageway into separate lanes and islands for channelizing traffic at junctions, in
Conformity with the lines, grades and cross-sections shown in the drawing.
Materials:
Materials for shoulders median and islands shall consist of the same materials that used for embankment construction, subgrade, sub-bases and wearing courses (in case of treated shoulders) and shall confirm to the physical requirements of each individual layers.
Procedure:
- The sequence of construction operations shall be such that the shoulders, median and islands are done in layers each matching the adjoining pavement layers. Where the materials in adjacent layers are different, these shall be laid together, pavement layer shall be compacted first, later the shoulder, median or island layers are compacted.
- In all cases where paved shoulders are to be provided alongside of existing carriageway, the shoulder shall be excavated to its full width as stated in drawings, and laid to the grade, camber as stated in drawings.
- Regardless of method of construction, the materials shall be placed directly on shoulders, median and islands; any spilled material on to the pavement shall be removed, without damage to the pavement.
- After the surface reached to the road level, if raised, the median and islands shall be raised at least by 300mm by using curbstones of approved materials.
